P2 explain the process of
distributing goods through
different channels from
the manufacturer to the
customer
Areas to research and discuss:
- · Define the term ‘distribution channels’
- · How businesses source their products? Domestically? Internationally? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of each.
- · How do distributions channels vary for large multiple retailers, smaller independent retailers and e-business’s
- · DESCRIBE 3 different types of retailers and the channels of distribution that they may use? i.e. independent, multiple and e-retailer
- · What is different in the distribution channels of food and clothing sectors
- · Explain the key term logistics how do these companies support the distribution process
- · Discuss the movement of goods through the distribution channels in relation to the DEMAND for the goods paying particular attention to how and where these goods are stored and the location of their storage facilities. How does this vary between the three businesses? Storage locations i.e. warehouses, stockrooms & distribution centres
- · What methods of transportation do the three different business types discussed previously? as rail, sea, road and air travel
- · How does the use of IT vary in the different supply chains
M2 Compare the methods used
to distribute products and
services
D1 - Evaluate the distribution
systems in delivering goods
and services for a selected
organisation
The grading criteria for D1 follows on from M2 and
requires learners to evaluate the distribution systems used in delivering goods
and services for a selected organisation. For this activity learners can choose
one of the organisations they looked at when completing E2. Learners should be
reminded that ‘evaluate’ means to make a judgement. This means they will need
to look at both the positive and the negative aspects of the distribution
systems used. Learners could consider the following:
●
responsiveness to consumer needs
●
the cost of the distribution system
●
using international or domestic suppliers
●
using intermediaries
●
any other transport arrangements, e.g. shipping.
For each issue identified, such as those above, learners
should identify the positives and negatives and then come to a conclusion.
Which is the most important? Why?
