    Dear year 12

For P6 you need to look at the spreadsheet that you have created for this unit and:
    • assess the functionality of your spreadsheet - does it do what you designed it to do.  If not why not?
    • is the spreadsheet suitable for the requirements and purpose that it was designed for. Do not discuss mundane things like the colours used unless they are relevant to a particular design feature e.g. RAG rated or identifying the best top and bottom worst variables!
    • Discuss instead why you think your solutions is appropriate and how it can be made more appropriate.

P4 Unit 29 Identify the competitive factors in the retail environment a selected organisation faces.

To complete this task in a week can I suggest that we all discuss the same retail
business and agree one period five today in class e.g. Poundland or Aldi perhaps then
we need to look at the following.

Theories that we need to understand and APPLY to the DISCOUNTERS include:

      • What is and what happens in a recession - include articles in FT.com (shout out and a hat tip to Eleanor R and her fine and swift research skills)
      • Government policy concerning planning permission for new store locations i.e. Oxford City and Botley Road developments - inc articles in the press
      • Competitors - Monopoly (one business in the market), Oligopolies 9a few businesses in the market) and Monopolistic (many businesses in the market) with a reference to different locations including the high street, retail parks and shopping centre4s
      • PESTLE and articles in the press
      • ANSOFFS - targeting new markets = can the business develop new products or can the business target new markets.  Is diversification realistic for the new business and can the business afford the costs associated with ANSOFFS theory
      • Marketing Mix and the dominance of PRICE
      • Michael Porters Five Forces is a method that helps companies look at the challenges faced in competitive markets and develop appropriate corporate strategies.
      • Barriers to entry!
      • Rationalisation - cutting jobs and cutting costs and non core activities
      • Cutting capacity and store closures!
      • Use of IT to drive change giving examples in the press
      Exam Board Expectations
For P4, learners will need to understand competitive factors in the retailing environment that drive change in the industry. Learners should identify aspects of government policy concerning planning guidance for new store locations, specifically the influence of Planning Policy Statements. They should know how the Competition Commission engages with the industry and, more broadly, how retailers’ costs and ways of working may be determined by government policy. Other competitive forces should also be studied including competitors, market position, barriers to entry and new retailing concepts. The use of ICT to drive change should be understood through studying contrasting stores and the application of ICT in marketing and stock management. Social and demographic trends can be evidenced through store-based customer surveys and/or observations. Broader economic trends can be tied into a study of the current performance of the industry as reported in the press. Competition should be explained though a study of a shopping location, such as a high street or shopping centre, in the context of the retail industry structure. Innovative products and services should be identified in one retailer and learners should explain the role of these products and services in creating a dynamic industry. Assessment could be a report based on an innovative retailer and the ways in which it adapted to its environment and how it uses change factors to drive its business

Some competitive factors to consider include:

      • Price
      • Market trends
      • Profit margins
      • Customer service
      • Quality of products

Some general questions that you might like to think about and include in this report

      1.  What is the market position of your business today compared to five years ago?
      2.    Have you identified the factors that are driving the change? eg PESTLE
      3.    Which factors do you believe have had the most significant impact on the organisation you have researched?
      4.    Is your chosen business trading in a Monopoly, Oligopoly or monopolistic competition? How does its position in the market affect its use of the 4P's
      5.    How has your chosen business been affected by the recent recession?
      6.    Is the store declining in terms of unit sales or value?
      7.    If the business has done well state three policies that it has implemented to responds to the recession e.g. Greggs did well because it ....
      8.    Why do you think that these strategies have apparently worked?
      9.    If your chosen business has done badly state three reasons why they could not overcome the problems caused by the recession e.g. Borders
      10.  Why do you think that some businesses were affected more than others during the recession?
      11. Research Michael Porters five forces looks at the changes companies face in competitive markets.  In order to deliver on their corporate strategy businesses need to negotiate these five forces.  What are they ?
      12. How do Porters five forces impact on your chosen business?
      13. Would it be difficult for retailers to change their offer and convert their stores quickly to serve another market?
      14. What new retail concepts have evolved over the last five years and how has this impacted on your chosen business? Have they followed this trend?

      15. Did you mention the competition commission? Has this commission ever need to engage with your chosen business sector.  When was the last time that this took place and what happened?

I cant think of a quicker way to do this but know that you will trust me in finishing this last
      P task!

      Good luck and enjoy

Unit 4 P4 - Evaluate the external corporate communication of an existing product or service

P4  Evaluate the external corporate communications of an existing product or service

Find two examples of real external corporate communication from a selected business and
evaluate it as a means of corporate communication. This could be:
        • A Billboard
        • Bust Stop Advertisment
        • Banner on busses
        • Taxi wrap
        • Social media
        • Current sponsorship
        • Online Newspapers but some of the best corporate communications can be found in the Sunday paper newspaper magazine.

        Hints & Useful Resources
If you are still thinking about OSA dont!. Instead you could be looking outside the current organisation that we have studied and instead be looking at something more exciting instead:
        • Apple Watch
        • Samsung Galaxy 6S
        • BT Broadband
        • Brookes Engage
        • EE TV
        • Get Hard Movie Launch

In order to evaluate your two examples of external corporate communication you must review each and judge whether they are effective. To do this follows the stages below:

        Stage 1
When reviewing each piece of corporate communication you should first describe what has been produced and how it has been presented and then state the intended audience i.e. parents, students etc. Include a copy of each piece of corporate communication.  Then assess something from all points of view:

        • Existing customers
        • Potential customers
        • Market / Critics
        • Competitors
        • Advertising agencies
        • Shareholders - will it excite them to buy more or upset them to offload their shares
        • Retailers - does it support their role in the distribution and sales of goods or services

        Stage 2
In terms of judging whether each piece of corporate communication is effective you need to consider whether the presentation method used matches the needs of the intended audience. You could also make judgements with regards to:
        -          Whether the examples follow the corporate guidelines as outlined in the Brand Book
        -          The use and resolution of images p.133 & p.144 core text
        -          Whether the communication supports non-English speakers p.133 see core text
        -          The page layout – does the document have a consistent look and feel to other documents produced by the SA – consider use of logo, text size, colours and font style p.134 see core text
        -          Whether the formatting of any text is appropriate p.134 core text
        -          Whether any tables or graphs are used
        -          Whether the right medium was used to present the communication

        Stage 3

. You should then form a conclusion and from this make suggest revisions for improvements

        Thursday, 12 March 2015

        P5

P5 requires you to test your spreadsheet for functionality and purpose and repair any faults documenting any changes made

Is your spreadsheet fit for purpose?

Does it do what it says it should?

Any changes you have made should be documented!

        Business Support

Who do you go and see if you want to start up a business?

        1. Accountants - Set up your company and your accounts including VAT and PAYE (employee Tax)
        2. Solicitors - Help set up your legal requirements like LTD, PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT
        3. What is matched funding?
        4. Business Angels and Venture capitalists - Dragons Den
        5. Three Sources of business advice - Chamber of Commerce - Business Link
        6. Shell Live Wire
        7. Princess Trust
        8. UK Intellectual Property Office - What is a patent?

P3 Explain how focussing on the customer by providing good customer service is essential to retailing

P3 is asking you to collect some PRIMARY and SECONDARY research about consumer shopping choices.
        • Why do some people prefer to shop at Waitrose, John Lewis to shop for their groceries?
        • Why is shopping at Harvey Nichols, Harrods and Selfridges such a different experience?
        • How can Ralph Slater's Menswear sell designer suits for men at £100 each?
        • Why are Apple retail shops so amazing ?
        • What is a customer focus and how does it help you compete in any business?
        BTEC assessment CRITERIA
        • For P3, learners will demonstrate how retailers relate to their customers. Customer service is highly formalised and demanding in some organisations, while others have a lower standard of service. Learners should identify organisational customer service policies and how these are applied at an operational (store) level.
        • They should show how different organisations require different levels of service, and to meet this criterion they will need to understand the industry structure.
        • After-sales service is significant in some retail sectors and the elements of this aspect of customer service should be identified.
        • Similarly, a range of service and quality standards should be identified through store visits.
        • Selling skills and the sales process can be observed and experienced in a range of stores. A suitable assessment would involve a customer service survey in a sample of retailers, a survey of teaching staff buying habits at OSA and an overview of the customer service data available from UK shoppers
Lots of questions but not many answers yet.  To tackle this task I suggest we:
        1. You agree on a range of retail outlets - food or non food you decide - one economy budget, one middle of the road and one upmarket supplier.
        2. Identify a definition of customer service is?
        3. Identify their customer service policies for each business you choose.
        4. How are the stores customer service policies applied to an operational store level?
        5. Why do different stores offer different levels of service?
        6. What retail outlets would you say after sales service is more important?
        7. What retail stores would you say pre-sales customer service is key?
        8. Do all stores offer the same pre-sales and post sales customer service levels?
        9. Some companies like Quantas have thrown them out and redrafted them with the help of World Class customer trainers such as Mary Gober
        Now for the assignment
        1. Identify six service and quality standards that your business has set from its customer service policy
        2. Design a questionnaire to see how effective each business is at exceeding its goals see links here and here
        3. Use the questionnaire to visit stores and survey customers and then survey teachers. Some companies, such as Performance in People spend much of their time doing just that for their clients.
        4. With the data we collect we can analyse this to see who is achieving their goals and who is not and see if there are any comparisons across the three suppliers
        5. Now your ready to answer the big question - Why is focusing on the customer by providing good customer service essential to retailing.

M3 & D2 Development of sales techniques and customer service

In order to meet the grading criteria for M3 learners must explain the ways in which sales techniques and customer service have developed in retail organisations. Learners could complete the following activity to help them meet this criteria.

M3 Explain the ways in which sales techniques and customer service have developed in retail organisations.

Choose an organisation that you are familiar with. A business in a fast-moving industry such as IT might allow you to answer these questions more easily. For example, PC World started out by selling desktop computers, but over time it has expanded its product range as new technology has seen new products being developed.
        1. How have the sales techniques of your chosen organisation changed over time? For example, staff at PC World are likely to be given in-depth training on how to use new products sold at the stores.
        2. How has the customer service aspect of your chosen organisation evolved? For example, due to technological advances and the complexity of some of the items sold, PC World needs to care for its customers before, during and after transactions.
        3. Are the changes you have identified short or long term?
        4. What has caused the changes?

D2 Assess the impact of sales techniques and customer service in a selected organisation

The grading criteria for D2 follows on from M3 and requires learners to assess the impact of different sales techniques and customer service in a selected organisation. Learners could complete the following activity using the same organisation they investigated when completing M3
        1. What different sales techniques does your organisation use.
        2. What different forms of customer service does your organisation use?
        3. For both sales techniques and customer service which type is the most effective?
        4. How do the different types of sales techniques and customer service used impact on the customer?

        Unit 6 - P3 and P4

        Task 4
Now you are ready to prepare the Financial Plan. To do this
        ·         Input data on forecast sales, any other revenues, costs of fixed assets, costs of variable assets, other expenses into the business planning software for micro businesses that you have available to you; make checks to ensure that you have done this accurately (P3)

Generate the following financial documents for your business:

o    Projected profit and loss statement
        o    Break-even calculation
        o    Projected cash flow
        o    Projected balance
o    Key Performance Rations such as Return on Capital Employed (ROCE)

Identify good points and issues of concern for each of the financial documents and make notes of these on the financial documents themselves (P4)
This provides evidence for P3 and P4

        Deadline date 25th February 2015

Section 4 - A description and an analysis of the suitability of other locations that the business could choose

        Morning Year 10

if we were going to suggest moving Qumins to a new location within the Oxford Ring Road where would this be?

        Step 1
Consider alternative locations in Oxford City
        1. Cowley Road - shopping - city guide  the two ends of Cowley Road
        2. Cowley Centre - Templar Square
        3. Oxford City Centre - Clarendon Centre - Westgate Centre
        4. Golden Cross - Covered Market
        5. Close to Oxpens / Wesgate development - approved plans design stage  start date
        6. Oxford Castle Quarter
        7. Botley Road exhisting Retail Park and new development
        8. Summertown
        9. Headington
        10. Little Clarendon Street Oxford - restaurant guide
        11. Jericho Oxford -  a brief history
        12. Hybrid store - located in another premises - retail outlet or Pub
        13. Take over a premises currently in use as something else and apply for change of use! Why not see whats available at Daltons Weekly  or Central Business Agency
        Step 2
After researching the above potential locations and perhaps some others of your own then try to whittle the list down to your top three before you carry out the analysis below

        Step 3
Carry out your 8 step analysis of your top three locations (specific advantages and disadvantages of each location)
        1. Can raw materials be easily delivered?
        2. Labour - can you easily get workers and how much is the competition paying for them if you have to compete?
        3. Transport - can customers get to you easily? Are there adequate places to park? Is parking free or expensive. Is the business on a well establish public transport network?
        4. Communication - does the business benefit from internet and high speed broadband connections?
        5. Location of your customers - who are they and where are they and will you have enough to share with your other competitors?
        6. Operating costs - What is your fixed costs such as rent going to be in this location? Are their any other ongoing costs like maintenance charges or ground rent if its a leasehold property.  Is the start up cost significantly high e.g. cost of lease for remaining period of rental?
        7. Future opportunities - are their any planning developments that will benefit you in the short term and long term or any that will cause you any problems in this proposed location
        8. Competition -  there are many reasons why a business would want to set up in an area with much competition.  The area may be known as a foody street like little Clarendon Street and somewhere worth a regular visit.  You could even take 20% of your customers from five separate businesses so that you are busy every day and compete on PRICE! QUALITY or do better incentives and PROMOTIONS than anyone else?
Job done now get on with doing your research!

Part 2 - A description of the current location of the business

Good morning year 10 and welcome back to Business

Having completed the introduction as a draft / practice we are now in a position where we can describe the current location of the business.  To do this we need to think about:

        1. Raw materials.  Make the point that this is a service sector business and as a result will need regular supplies delivered.  Can raw materials be delivered easily and effectively.
        2. Labour - The location is in an area of low unemployment and although the business does not need masses of staff it will need to pay high wages to compete with the competition.
        3. Transport - can customers get to you easily? Are there adequate places to park? Is parking free or expensive. Is the business on a well establish public transport network?
        4. Communication - does the business benefit from internet and high speed broadband connections? If not how can this be a disadvantage to it ?
        5. Location of the market - unlike manufactures who do not need to be near their customers a service sector business does.  Is your chosen business located where people can easily get to them. Who are their customers and are there enough of them?
        6. Operating costs - A business will pay more to be in an area where land is scarce and property rents and prices are high as there will be many organisations looking to compete for that location and don't forget with planning permissions a business owner can apply for change of use for a property. What are the rent and rates for your chosen business in its current location as this will have a massive impact on the profits
        7. Future opportunities - A business may locate to a place in anticipation of future developments and the thought of more customers in the future.  Oaks were in the covered market but knowing what development is heading for the Westgate Shopping precinct they decided to move to St Ebbes and be closer to the action two years before the changes take place!

        Unit 3 Branding P5 and M3 challenge

        P5 Plan a promotional campaign
Know you have a brand; you now need to plan out the promotional campaign to launch your brand.  Ideally, you could begin creating some of the promotional material you would use.  You need to include in your plan:
        • What your promotional objectives are
        • The selected promotional mix – you must have at least: a poster; advert for a newspaper/magazine; mail shot/direct marketing and website.
        • Explain the media used and reasons why and how the AIDA model will help communicate with customers
        • Why this promotional mix is appropriate for the product/service and how this will make the promotional plan successful.
M4 Justify the choice of promotional mix for a brand

You will need to create a presentation which SHOULD JUSTIFY the CHOICE of the promotional mix that you have designed for your client. In order to this successfully, you will need to explain:

        1. Why you have selected the promotional material for the business.
        2. Think about how will help meet the objectives of the campaign,
        3. how the logo is suitable for the business
        4.  how the promotional methods link to the purpose, size and scale of the business
        5. Would the costs outweigh the benefits
        6. How do each of the promotional activities help contribute to improving sales

          Task 4.2:        BOARD MEETING (P2, P3, P4 & D2)

In order to complete this you must:

          a)     Obtain financial information from your selected organisation and give a five minute verbal presentation about what the financial information shows about the performance of the business or part of the business. Your verbal presentation should be suitable for a number of business journalists who want to report on the performance of the business (P2)

          b)     Produce a brief written report on what the information shows about the performance of the business or part of the business. This report should be suitable for the directors or the senior management of the business and should include a spreadsheet or graph to help explain the financial situation (P2)

          c)     Produce a leaflet, which is aimed at the staff of the business, telling them about the financial performance of the business or part of the business. The majority of the staff do not have any financial knowledge (P2)

          d)     Using the same organisation or any other organisation of your choice, produce a corporate communication such as an advert, poster or leaflet communicating information about the business or one of its products or services. Your proposed audience will be the businesses customers and potential customers (P3)

          e)     Find an example of a real external corporate communication from your selected business and evaluate it as a means of corporate communication. This could be an advert they have produced or a poster, leaflet, packaging, logos, livery, strap lines, endorsements or any sponsorship they may have undertaken (P4)

          f)      Your final task is to evaluate the effectiveness of the business information and its communication as key contributors to the success of the organisation, using examples to illustrate your points. For this task you will need to research examples of effective business information and its communication in other businesses who are regarded as having effective systems of information and communication, as well as your selected organisation. You will then be able to draw some comparisons between examples of effectiveness in other businesses and your selected business (D2)
